I am very fortunate to live in such a beautiful place. As everyone who has visited is aware, there are a lot of people here not as lucky as we are. I have been moved by the way the people here have accepted me and made me welcome. Not only does this give me comfort but it is also a good thing for all our guests, as everywhere we go we are known and all of you are treat with respect.

Anyway I have been introduced to a local school; the introduction was from my trusted right hand man Frank. It is a school for children with Downs Syndrome and it has really touched my heart. A lot of these children were abandoned at birth because of there illness and so they are orphaned as well as being different. The facilities here are not like Europe or the States or Canada and these children are cared for in surroundings which could be better. The problem is they don't get government grants and state aid here so they are self sufficient.

My main objective in 2007 is to try and raise $75,000 US for this school. I am going to register a charity, with trustees and run it like a business, but both mine and the trustee's time will be given free. The money, whatever amount we raise will not be given to them as cash but I would like to develop a entertainment room for them, with Air Conditioner and Large TV and a few computers, just everyday things that we are used to having. I will develop a web site that I will be able to update progress on as well as giving information about Downs Syndrome in general.

So there you have it people, that's my hobby for 2007.

How can we make donations? Paypal, while we're there or only via website?

Can we make upfront donations or do we have to wait (Note: I realize if you are not registered it isn't a tax deduction - but that isn't the issue)

I will be starting in mid January when the school restarts.
In a perfect world I would like to have everything with a seperate bank account that I can link pay pal to, that way everything is accountable. However this is Venezuela and it's not so easy.
The Venezuelan bank account I have, I just need the registration to activate it, I don't have yet but in the New Year that should be done. I also need the registration so I can register the web site as a charity, that way it gets great favours from our friend Mr. Google, so it will be easier to get exposure.
Anyone who wishes to send a donation now is welcome to do it through my pay pal. I will have a donations list on the board and the site and it goes without saying I won't be running away with the money jar.

Send me a paypal for $300 to start you off. If anyone else can do it now I would ask that you do it. The more funds Paul has now the sooner things can get done.

I grew up with someone with Down's - the son of an old friend of my mother and his father was killed in WW2 - so I know how hard it can be.

I'll get in touch with the local Down's support group for advice and further help.

About the computers, are you talking desktop or laptops? The reason I ask is that if you are thinking laptops in the US we can get them for as little as $500 for a modest model. If someone wanted to donate one they could bring it with them in their carry on and leave it with you at the resort - provided that we can legally do that.

I echo what everyone else has said. Let us know more about your plans for the school and how we can help out. Everyone loves to help their fellow man but few know the way to best accomplish that. I have no doubt you will far surpass your goal and I would certainly love to do what little I can to help.
