It's been almost a year since anyone made a post on this thread, however, given the current events I still think the BCS needs to create some sort of playoffs for the BCS. I saw a viable 16 team playoff schedule a week ago and it made a lot of sense to me and my co-workers that saw it. For now good luck in picking who plays this year.
I think there is limited appeal to college football. It is mostly for college sports fans and gamblers. The BCS just seems to fill the time around XMas and New Years when guys want to get away from wives and/or girlfriends.
Just a note for non college "American" football fans. There are 32 Bowl games and in my opinion, some of them could be converted to play off games with Bowl champions for those games but allows the team to advance to the next round.
Hi, You are right about the bowl games. Way too many that aren't very interersting. Use them for a 16 team playoff system that would get all of the top schools involved. No home field advantage, just lots of money, thats what its all about and if they are shown the money they will play. Bowl game start as early as the first week of December. You only need 4 weeks to do a 16 team playoff. Whats the problem? The champuionship game could be the same as it is now and put a consolation game in for 3rd the day before. The season would be finished the same time as they are now. Right now if we did this, in the first round it would be Ohio State vs. Tennessee (great matchup), Georgia vs. Florida, etc. There are some great matchups and some rotten ones. Just like the bowl games. If you win you go on, lose go home. You still played in your one "bowl" game and took your money. Those that win get more money. Just a view from a fan.
Well, it looks like the BCS playoff fight is going to be heating up. I saw this on Yahoo today:

Game-changing call to college football: Playoff By FREDERIC J. FROMMER, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP)—Tackling an issue sure to rouse sports fans, lawmakers pressed college football officials Friday to switch the Bowl Championship Series to a playoff, with one Texas Republican likening the current system to communism and joking it should be labeled “BS,” not “BCS.”

John Swofford, the coordinator of the BCS, rejected the idea of switching to a playoff, telling a House panel that it would threaten the existence of celebrated bowl games. Sponsorships and TV revenue that now go to bowl games would instead be spent on playoff games, “meaning that it will be very difficult for any bowl, including the current BCS bowls, which are among the oldest and most established in the game’s history, to survive,” Swofford said.

Rep. Joe Barton of Texas, who has introduced legislation that would prevent the NCAA from calling a game a national championship unless it’s the outcome of a playoff, bluntly warned Swofford: “If we don’t see some action in the next two months, on a voluntary switch to a playoff system, then you will see this bill move.”

Frankly, I think is silly that Congress has to get involved, but the controlling forces don't want to gives us a fair playoff system in College Football because it reduces the amount of money they get. I had to laugh when Swofford said "revenue would go to the playoff games instead of the Bowl games and they wouldn't survive" - depending on how it's done, some of the Bowl games could be playoff games. Beside if anything, it would generate more revenue (overall) because there would likely be more games (You may even end up with say two games played at the Cotton bowl instead of one).I'm hoping that maybe, maybe we will finally see a change.
For members not from the US, the above story shows what a wonderful country the US is. Any person can be elected to our Congress, as shown by the fooking idiot in the story above.
Well, I thought I would revive this thread a little. Last week the BCS ranked Oklahoma was #1, Oregon #2, Boise #3, Auburn #4 with TCU at 5 and LSU at 6. Now Oklahoma losses, Oregon BLASTS an unranked team, Boise didn't play yet and Auburn beats # 6 in a close game. BCS sees it's way to move # 4 all the way to # 1 - sorry I don't see it, yes they beat LSU but it could have just as easily gone the other way, it was a close game that Auburn came out on top but not in a way that they should be propelled to the number 1 spot in the BCS poll!

Unfortunately the BCS isn't going to change because there is to much money in it for those that control it. In the mean time, the fans and many collages pay the price of this unfair ranking system that leads to a so-called national championship game.

Here's a look at the BCS ratings for the week:

Here is the first BCS top 14 of the season, with the school, its spot in the Harris poll, its spot in the coaches' poll and its BCS computer average. A bonus: Included NCAA schedule strength, which is not part of the BCS formula.
